Who we are
My name is Hamish Duncan McNeill
I am a baker. I am 40 years old.
After my Dad passed away 22 years ago, my older brother came up with the name 'Hungry Hamish' for me to have a business of my own because I have always liked food and baking. I enjoyed cooking and baking at school.
Then in October 2019, we (that's my mum and me) got Damian to start working with me. He is a baker, and he left his job to come and help me start my own business called 'Hungry Hamish'. We have been baking lots of yummy things. We are baking healthy cookies ... so far, my favorite is our Chocolate Chip Cookie. We are making other things but some of them are a secret! (for now). We have a Facebook page called 'Hungry Hamish'. Please like and follow my page.
We have set up our bakery in Marton. That is about 45 minutes from Palmerston North. We are baking cookies, cooling cookies and packaging cookies. I have got my own business card. The best part of my job is baking cookies and working with my baker, Damian. Damian helps me to make the cookies. He helps get the big mixer going for me too. I love my job. I have learnt to keep focused on the cookies, to smile a lot and to be kind to everyone I meet.
I feel great to have the Hungry Hamish business and it is my dream job.
Hello, I’m Christina, the Director of Hungry Hamish and Hamish’s mother. I was born and breed in the Wairarapa, a farm girl at heart. Palmerston North has now been our home for 21 years.
I’m a trained primary school teacher and manage OSCAR programmes in the Manawatu/Rangitikei region.
We started thinking about having a business for Hamish when a teacher said.. “ our kids ( special needs) don’t get jobs”. That comment didn’t sync with Hamish’s determination to be employed, or mine. Now 20 years, later here we are!
Outside of my businesses, I like keeping myself busy with crafting, photography and walking. Walking really helps me to refocus and balance my physical and emotional well-being.
Having owned my own businesses for over 20 years, I like the challenge of bringing a bakery into the fold, especially as it has helped to fulfil my son’s dream of having his own baking business.
Amongst all of our products, my favourite is our paleo style bite-size double chocolate cookie. I love to have a couple with my coffee
Hi, I'm Damian the Baker, Operations Manager for Hungry Hamish and Hamish’s support worker (he's also my best mate). I was born in Palmerston North and have lived locally most of my life.
I'm a qualified Baker and have been in the trade now for 30 years holding nearly every position from cleaner to advisor in a plethora of bakeries with different ranges and styles.
nearing the end of 2019, I felt it was time for a change and had a desire to work with people with disabilities. Christina and Hamish approached me at church and shared Hamish’s vision for a bakery and asked if I knew of anyone who would be interested in helping him. After a short time of reflection and prayer, I knew exactly who would love the opportunity. Me.
Outside of work I stay busy by serving in ministry, study online trading and hitting the gym. I've competed in body building competitions across the north island over the past two decades. Weight training has a been a constant in my life since leaving high school. I like pushing my limits and it's a great way to relieve stress and hit personal goals. Serving in ministry helps me to build my faith and relationship with God.
Helping Hamish achieve his dream is the most rewarding thing I've ever done. We have an incredible workplace filled with a great energy and happiness. We laugh a lot at work and Hamish is an awesome Boss!
